Bret’s work has been said to be “Groovy, experimental rock/fusion with celestial electronic excursions” and also follows influence from Avant-Garde and funk. I’ve explained it to people as post-Zorn jazz but also has tunes that are more straight ahead, sometimes with latin grooves.
One of the more unique things about Bret’s sound is his use of effects that gives his horn a synth-like quality. But his playing confidently can bounce between everything from traditional, mainstream jazz lines to blistering torrents of modern and Avant-Garde saxgodness.
With Bret, Brian Chain, Michael John McKee and myself we recorded Test Pattern in early 2017.
The current line up features Taylor Hamill on drums. We recorded this stuff back in March of 2019.
You can find older stuff of his posted here.
